| Virtuoso Bluegrass Duo in Herndon Herndon, VA. An evening of hot picking and good humor comes to the Coffeehouse at Holy Cross Lutheran Church on Friday, October 8th at 7:30 p.m. when the duo of Jimmy Gaudreau and Orrin Star appears in concert. Gaudreau is a household name in bluegrass circles, having performed with several of the idiom's premier ensembles including The Country Gentlemen, J.D. Crowe & the New South, and The Tony Rice Unit. Known for his smooth tenor vocals and for his driving and inventive mandolin playing, in February Gaudreau is being inducted into the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America's "Hall of Greats". Star is an award-winning guitar, banjo and mandolin player who’s also funny. With music ranging from fiddle tunes to topical ballads to western swing, and story-telling both sharp and droll, he has been described as ‘Arlo Guthrie-meets-Doc Watson’. Winner of the 1976 National Flatpicking Championship (the largest bluegrass guitar contest in the country) Star has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and also worked for five years as a stand-up comic in New England. Together since this past summer, Gaudreau and Star offer great picking, sweet singing, dry humor, and a repertoire that ranges from original instrumentals to bluegrass standards, little-known folk gems to choice mandolin duets. They are on the web at www.jimmyandorrin.com. Holy Cross Lutheran Church is located at 1090 Sterling Road in Herndon. Admission is $12. Doors open at 6:30 pm.
